SERVICES - Occam Education

OUR SERVICES FOR YOUR FUTURE CAREER

The services we provide are customized to the needs of each family, and the best way to learn about what exactly we do is to read the "Case studies" of students who have worked with us. In general, you can think of our services as comprising 3 main elements: private tutoring, admissions consulting and coaching.

To get a general idea of the services your child likely needs, we recommend you complete the short form found on the Where to start? page or send us a message by choosing a convenient method of communication on the Contact Us page.

Private Tutoring

We prepare students for standardized tests that students must take, including the SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Tests, TOEFL and IELTS. We also teach students advanced courses, beginning with Advanced Placement (AP) and progressing to university-level courses. We teach advanced courses for two reasons: first, students wanting to attend an elite university must have superior academic résumés, and second, exploring advanced courses is a good way for students to see if they would really enjoy the careers they are considering. Lastly, we train our students extensively in the English language. Many students will begin with an intensive English as a second language program to acquire vocabulary and the ability to read, write, and speak at a native level. We then teach our students to write and read at an advanced university-level, often by supervising year-long reading and writing programs.

Admissions Consulting

From the first day, we engage in academic discernment so students can wisely select fields of study that will make them happy and lead to successful careers. Sometimes this includes giving students psychological assessments to begin discussions about their interests and personalities. The next step is to strategic plan extracurricular résumés so students can further explore and confirm their interests while also preparing for acceptance to the best universities. With many students, this begins with selecting a range of after-school activities (the easy part). The hard part, for students wanting to attend truly competitive universities, comes next: we work to devise large extracurricular projects that can last months and culminate in achievements such as publishing an article in a scientific journal, launching a small business or charity, or submitting a proposal for a public art installation. The third part of our admissions consulting program is the selection of universities and academic programs so students can be successful in their careers, which hopefully have become clear as a result of the previous steps. For some, we help by identifying the best universities for a particular field of study, such as entrepreneurship. For many, we help by identifying the first and second choices by answering questions like: which school is the easiest to reach by plane, in a city, with a not-too-liberal student body that is welcoming to international students?

Coaching

After a decade in education, one of Occam’s founders returned for an advanced degree in psychology, a Master’s in Science in Applied Positive Psychology, because he found that what often limits students has nothing to do with academics. All Occam tutors and consultants now receive psychological training so they can better identify academic and personal challenges such as low motivation or confidence, high levels of stress, maladaptive perfectionism, difficulty with executive functioning (a cognitive process necessary for setting and reaching goals), and many more. At Occam, education and psychology are fused together as we coach, mentor and train students to become the best versions of themselves.
